          Significance of Shankhabhishekam
There are many Stories about the Shankh and its usage in performing Abhishekam to Lord Shiva on the Occasions of Karthik Somavarams (Mondays). Here we state few of such stories.

          - Airavatham, the Divine Elephant, uchaishravas, the divine horse, and valompuri Shankh, all white in colour came out of the Milk Ocean (Palkadal in Tamil or Ksheera Sagaram in Telugu) along with Goddess Mahalakshmi. So valompuri Shankh  is considered very  auspicious and kept for poojas only and not blome. For Abhishekam Edampuri Shankh is considered. It is believed that the Shankh pooja brings great prosperity due to the blessings of the Goddess Mahalakshmi and the Shankh theertham removes all the Sins. Abhishekam of the Vigrahas and Pavithra Jalam enriched with Veda Manthras from the 1008 or 108 Shankhs is akin to sahasranama or Ashtothram respectively.

          - Thousands of years back, the Shankh went to Lord Shiva asked as to how they should wash off their Sins as many people take Bath rivers and Oceans to wash off their Sins. The Sins in the form of dirt accumulated on the shankh. Lord Parameshwara told them that if anybody performs abhishekam by Shankh during Karthik month in which Lord Parameshwara and Goddess Parvathi Joins, the Sins of Shankhs will be removed. Not only the Sins of Shankhs but also the Sins of the people who washed their Sins in Oceans and rivers from which Shankhs are collected. Therefore all will be happy and their Sins will be washed off. Shankh means Happiness. Further Shankh is recommended by Agama Sastras. Shankramanan is derived from the word Shankh and people go to Shankramanan in punya tithe or mix the ashes of person passed away. Shankh is the winning symbol of Battle.
